EXPLORE THE THOMSON WAY

our story
–
EXPLORE THE THOMSON WAY with local experts, socially responsible practices, personalized care, and meaningful adventures.

A Pioneering Vision
Since 1981, founders Judi Wineland and Rick Thomson have championed a more thoughtful approach to travel, grounded in local expertise and a commitment to the people and places at the heart of every journey.

Today, that vision lives on through two distinct experiences: Thomson Safaris, offering safaris in East Africa, and Thomson Treks, leading expertly guided climbs of Kilimanjaro. Both draw on decades of experience, seasoned local guides, and a shared commitment to responsible travel.

The Thomson Experience
At the heart of the Thomson experience is ukarimu, the Swahili spirit of hospitality. Personal care and attention to detail help guests feel welcome, while local guides who take pride in sharing their home bring each safari and trek to life.

A Commitment to People and Place
Recognized by Travel + Leisure, National Geographic Adventure, and Condé Nast, Thomson Safaris combines decades of Tanzania expertise with a commitment to giving back.

Through its nonprofit arm, Focus on Tanzanian Communities, and its founding role in the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, Thomson supports local communities and fair treatment for porters. Its partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation extends this commitment to wildlife conservation, reflecting the belief that travel should benefit the people and places that make each journey possible.

OUR EXPERTISE

WINELAND-THOMSON DIVISIONS

Thomson Safaris

Since 1981, Thomson Safaris has shared Tanzania’s wildlife, landscapes, and culture with guests, drawing on decades of in-country experience. Deep local knowledge, personal care, and a commitment to conservation and local communities shape every safari. Experienced Tanzanian guides bring the spirit of ukarimu, or Swahili hospitality, to each journey. With one guide throughout the safari, guests have time to build lasting relationships and a deeper connection to Tanzania and its people.

Thomson Treks

With decades of experience on Kilimanjaro, Thomson Treks combines expert local guides, personal care, and a commitment to trekker safety. A 98% summit success rate reflects careful preparation, routes designed for acclimatization, and rigorous safety protocols, including Wilderness First Responder-trained guides on every trek. Pioneering porter ethics and fair employment practices are just as central to the Thomson approach, helping guests reach the Roof of Africa with confidence.
